The Anointing of the Anointed (John 12:1-8)

Sermons JohnOn Sunday, December 13, 2015, Pastor Joe Troutman preached “The Anointing of the Anointed” from John 12:1-8.

The Messiah, God’s Anointed, receives a royal anointing fit for a King who will be enthroned on a cross for the sins of his people.

1. A Joyous Celebration—A week prior to his Passion, Jesus is honored by a dinner in Bethany, where Martha served, Lazarus reclined with Jesus at table and Mary anointed Jesus’s feet with ointment and dried them with her hair.

2. Lavish Humility—Was it a waste for Mary to anoint Jesus’s feet with such expensive ointment? Perhaps, was it not for her understanding of the inestimable value of her Lord Jesus Christ. Mary humbled herself to make contact with Jesus’s filthy feet to honor the Anointed One by anointing him in a most extravagant way.

Jesus was likewise humble in his willingness to take on human flesh and wade through the filth in the streets of first century Israel, symbolizing his willingness to take on even the spiritual filth of his people and to suffer our death on the cross, for which he deserves similarly extravagant worship from us as well.
